Study in Hungary 2026–27: key facts for Bangladeshi students

Hungary offers English-taught degrees at public universities. Bachelor's tuition is about BDT 5 to 10 lakh a year, and living costs are EUR 600 to 800 a month outside Budapest. The Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship pays tuition plus HUF 43,700 a month. You file the study residence permit in Dhaka, the fee is EUR 110, and you can work 30 hours a week during term.

Stipendium Hungaricum or self-funded: which route fits you?

The Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship pays your tuition and a monthly stipend, but places are limited, there is one deadline a year, and SHED must nominate you. The self-funded route costs about BDT 5 to 10 lakh a year in tuition, but it has more intakes, more programmes and a predictable outcome. Many Bangladeshi students apply for both in the same year.

A Hungarian language course in year 1 is compulsory. Skipping it stops the stipend.

Best for strong academic records, a convincing motivation letter, and students who can wait for July results. The stipend helps, but it does not cover all living costs, so plan family support of about BDT 50,000 or more a month.

The 2027/28 call has not been published yet. The dates below follow the 2026/27 round and are marked as expected.

How to study in Hungary from Bangladesh: 7 steps

Choose a programme and funding route, prepare and attest your documents, then apply to the university or to Stipendium Hungaricum. Next, pass the entrance exam, accept your offer, lodge your residence permit at VFS Bangladesh in Dhaka, and fly to Hungary to collect your residence card. Self-funded students should allow about 4 to 7 months from start to finish.

  1. Choose your programme, university and funding route

    Shortlist 2 to 4 English-taught programmes that match your HSC or bachelor's subjects, your budget and your career plan. Then decide between Stipendium Hungaricum, self-funded study, or both at once.

    • Check each programme's entry subjects, English requirement and intake.
    • Check whether the university requires prepayment from Bangladeshi students.

    Compare fees per year, not per semester. Universities quote them differently.

  2. Prepare and attest your documents

    Get the core set ready early. Attestation and English tests take the longest.

    • Passport valid for the whole study period
    • SSC and HSC (or bachelor's) certificates and transcripts in English
    • English proof: IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo (BME, Corvinus) or a Medium of Instruction letter where accepted
    • Certificates attested by the Education Board or your university, then by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
    • CV, motivation letter and recommendation letters, where the programme asks for them

    Ask your university and the Dhaka Office whether you need any further legalisation before you book an appointment.

  3. Apply to the university or to Stipendium Hungaricum

    Self-funded: apply on the university's own portal and pay the application fee, usually EUR 100 to 150. Scholarship: apply on the Tempus portal with up to 2 programme choices, and apply to SHED for nomination by the same deadline.

  4. Pass the entrance exam or interview

    Almost every Hungarian university tests applicants online, usually in maths or the core subject plus an English interview. Medical schools test Biology and Chemistry, and Debrecen also tests Physics.

    • Revise your HSC subject basics, and be ready to explain why you chose this course and Hungary.

  5. Accept your offer and pay tuition

    Once you have an acceptance letter, self-funded students pay tuition as the university instructs. Some universities, including Debrecen, ask Bangladeshi students to prepay at least one year plus a deposit before sending the documents needed for the residence permit.

    • Get the refund policy in writing before you pay, in case your visa is refused.
    • Arrange accommodation (a dormitory or private rental) and health insurance.

  6. Apply for the residence permit at VFS Bangladesh, Dhaka

    Lodge your residence permit for study at the Hungary visa application centre of VFS Bangladesh in Dhaka, which works for the Dhaka Office of the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi. You do not need to go to India. The decision is made by Hungary's immigration authority (NDGAP).

  7. Fly to Hungary and get your residence card

    Once approved, you receive a D visa to enter Hungary. You must enter within 3 months of it being issued. In Hungary, follow the Enter Hungary notice to give your biometrics, and collect your residence permit card.

    • Renew the permit on Enter Hungary at least 30 days before it expires.

Best universities in Hungary for Bangladeshi students (2026/27 fees)

The universities Bangladeshi students choose most are ELTE, BME, Semmelweis and Corvinus in Budapest, and Debrecen and Szeged in the east and south. Non-medical bachelor's degrees cost about BDT 5 to 10 lakh a year. Medicine costs about BDT 21 to 26 lakh a year. Debrecen and BME also take students for a February start.

Is there a Hungarian embassy in Dhaka? No, there is no full embassy. However, the Dhaka Office of the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi handles student residence permit (D visa) cases, and you apply through VFS Bangladesh in Dhaka. You do not need an Indian visa or a trip to Delhi for a Hungarian study permit, despite what many older articles say.

12 mistakes that cost Bangladeshi students a place or a visa in Hungary

Most failed Hungary applications from Bangladesh come down to a few avoidable problems:

  • missing the separate SHED nomination for the scholarship
  • a sponsor file that does not show where the money came from
  • photocopies submitted where originals are required
  • applying too late to allow the 2 to 3 months a permit can take
  • trusting outdated advice, such as travelling to Delhi or a fixed "bank balance" figure

Scholarship application 3 mistakes

  • Applying to Tempus but not to SHED

    Bangladeshi applicants must also be nominated by SHED, with the same deadline. In 2018, about 100 Bangladeshi applicants were dropped at this step.

  • Choosing two programmes that don't match your background

    You get only 2 ranked choices, and they cannot be changed after the deadline. Pick programmes that fit your HSC or degree subjects, and don't put two highly competitive Budapest programmes together.

  • Paying someone who "guarantees" a scholarship

    Applying for Stipendium Hungaricum is free, and selection is on merit. Nobody can guarantee a place. Good help improves your file; it doesn't buy a seat.

University admission 3 mistakes

  • Assuming every university accepts a Medium of Instruction letter

    BME and Debrecen may accept one, but Corvinus bachelor's programmes do not. Check each programme's English rule before you apply.

  • Paying the tuition prepayment without reading the refund terms

    Some universities, including Debrecen, require Bangladeshi students to prepay at least a year. Get the refund policy for a visa refusal in writing first.

  • Starting too late for September

    Admission, payment and the permit together take about 4 to 7 months. For September 2027, apply between October 2026 and February 2027.

Visa file 4 mistakes

  • A sudden large deposit with no explanation

    Hungarian missions ask for the origin of the money. Show 6 months of steady statements, plus proof of salary, business, land or rental income.

  • Bringing photocopies where originals are required

    Bring the originals plus one full copy set, and check attestation before your appointment.

  • Booking the appointment before the file is complete

    Hungarian missions name this, and health insurance that doesn't cover the whole stay, as common process errors. Book only when everything is ready.

  • Hiding a previous visa refusal

    Always declare it, and explain what has changed since. Being caught concealing a refusal is far worse than the refusal itself.

After you arrive 2 mistakes

  • Skipping the compulsory Hungarian language course (scholarship holders)

    Skipping it stops your stipend, and failing the exam cuts it to HUF 30,000 a month.

  • Working more than allowed or falling far behind in your studies

    Keep to 30 hours a week during term. Your permit can be refused or withdrawn if you don't graduate within 1.5 times the normal programme length.

Why Hungary study permits get refused

Hungary does not publish refusal statistics for Bangladesh. Official checklists and mission guidance point to the same five weak spots:

  1. Funds not provenThe statements are too short, the deposits are unexplained, or the sponsor's income doesn't match the amount.
  2. Doubts about genuine studyThe course doesn't fit your background, or you can't explain your choice in the interview.
  3. Incomplete or non-original documentsMissing pages, unattested certificates, or copies instead of originals.
  4. Inconsistent informationDates, names or amounts differ between your forms, letters and statements.
  5. Insurance or accommodation gapsCover that doesn't run for the whole stay, or no proof of where you will live.
"What is the Hungary visa success rate from Bangladesh?"

Hungary publishes no official visa success rate for Bangladesh, so treat any percentage you see online with caution. What you can control is the quality of your own file.

Is Hungary a good country for Bangladeshi students?

Yes, for many students. Hungary is an EU and Schengen country with English-taught degrees at public universities. Tuition is about BDT 5 to 10 lakh a year for most bachelor's degrees, and Bangladesh is a Stipendium Hungaricum partner country. You can apply for your residence permit in Dhaka and work up to 30 hours a week during term.

Can I study in Hungary without IELTS?

Yes, at some universities. BME and Corvinus accept Duolingo 100. BME and Debrecen may accept a Medium of Instruction letter if you studied in English. Semmelweis and Szeged assess English in their medical entrance exams. Corvinus does not accept a Medium of Instruction letter on its own for bachelor's degrees. Always check the rule for your specific programme.

What HSC result do I need to study in Hungary?

Hungary has no single national minimum GPA. Each university sets its own entry requirements and tests applicants through an entrance exam or interview, and medical schools focus on Biology and Chemistry. A strong HSC result in subjects related to your course improves your chances, especially for the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship.

Is a study gap accepted in Hungary?

Hungary has no national rule against study gaps, and many universities accept applicants with a gap after HSC or a bachelor's degree. Explain the gap with documents, such as a job letter or course certificates, in your CV and motivation letter, and be ready to discuss it in the visa interview. Check your university's own rules before you apply.

How much bank balance is needed for a Hungary student visa?

Hungary does not publish a fixed minimum bank balance for students. You must show enough money for your whole stay and your return. In practice this means your sponsor's bank statements for the last 6 months, a sponsor declaration, proof of your relationship and proof of where the money came from.

How long does a Hungary student visa take from Bangladesh?

Hungary's immigration authority usually decides study residence permits within about 70 days. Allow 2 to 3 months between your VFS Bangladesh appointment in Dhaka and the start of classes. Once the permit is issued, you must enter Hungary within 3 months.

Can I work while studying in Hungary?

Yes. Under Hungarian law (Act XC of 2023), students with a study residence permit can work up to 30 hours a week during the teaching period, and full-time for up to 90 days a year outside it. The older 24-hour rule no longer applies. Job income should not be part of your visa financial plan.

Can I stay in Hungary after graduation?

Yes. Graduates holding a valid study residence permit can apply for a residence permit to look for a job or start a business in Hungary. Once you find a job, you can move to a work-based residence permit, as long as you meet its conditions.
